Obviously not all college is a scam. There are some professions and industries where you can’t learn everything you need to know on YouTube. I wouldn’t want my doctor to have to wait for the skip button to show up so he can finish giving me a diagnosis. We have a problem, though, of pushing college on everyone for the sake of it. Not everyone should go to college. Unfortunately, I believe our education system has become a one-size-fits-all factory using statistics and generalizations about what’s best for kids overall, rather than figuring out what works for people as individuals. Those individuals have to want to learn. So many people go to college because they just think that’s what you do. Then they use it for socializing and partying and end up after seven years with a degree nobody cares about and a hundred thousand dollars in debt only to go work at Starbucks. That’s where the scam comes in. Colleges are perfectly happy to give a kid a nonsense degree knowing full well they have an extremely expensive piece of paper that will in no way help them get a job. That’s the scam we should be teaching our kids to watch out for.
